That gas expands... As the exhaust reaches the muffler, just because you can see straight thru it, doesn't mean the exhaust goes in that single path. In actuality, it probably expands to the outer areas of the muffler first, goes through the baffles etc that GReddy put in it, then churns around alittle, and is pushed out by the newly entered exhaust. I seriously doubt it simply enters the muffler and goes directly out the tip. It would have to be a straight pipe for that to happen. Anytime you insert an open area in an exhaust system, the exhaust will expand and move around to fill the area before it leaves. Or at least I think that is how my physics courses explained it. £0£.
